Babe Ruth, the legendary New York Yankees baseball player, was known for speeding around in his $5,000 mahogany runabout, built by the Moran Brothers—an iconic boat much like this classic.
This Morin-brand triple-cockpit runabout was handcrafted on Greenwood Lake by the Morin Brothers during the winter of 1923. During the boating season, the brothers focused on repairs and maintenance, while the off-season was dedicated to building fine wooden boats. Its design closely follows the lines of the Gar Wood 24, featuring a specialized bottom and running surface engineered by Joseph Napoleon Lisee, famed for his work on the record-setting “Miss America” speedboats built by Chris-Craft and Gar Wood.
Since 2012, this classic vessel has been owned by George and Nancy. Originally powered by a 12-cylinder Scripps 302 engine—three times the weight of its current 350 Chevy engine—she now cruises comfortably at 24 mph while running at 2,500 RPMs. The boat has been spotted cutting through the waters of the Delaware River, the Mullica River behind Atlantic City, and the Chesapeake Bay.
One of only two known to exist, this rare mahogany beauty features a double-planked bottom with single-planked sides. The use of tight-grained white oak for the frames and keel enhances its structural integrity, minimizing water penetration and ensuring lasting durability.
