Bristol is the third oldest city in Pennsylvania. It predates the settlement of Philadelphia being settled in 1681 when Samuel Clift established a ferry across the Delaware River at this location. A Quaker settlement soon grew up around Cliff’s ferry, and in 1697 the residents petitioned the Provincial Council to establish the community as a market town. The Bristol borough has been known for its premier spa, its activity related to the Pennsylvania Canal, and as the most important industrial town in Bucks County. Located in Bucks County it has an area of 1.9 square miles and is situated across the Delaware River from Burlington, New Jersey. Center City Philadelphia is 23 miles to the SouthWest.
